NFR = Non Flame Retardant FR = Flame Retardant SE = Self Extinguishing IFR = Inherently Flame Retardant
The first method of measure (as shown in this
illustration), uses a Digital Light Meter with the incident
light dome in place. There is a Flat Black 4-1/4" cylinder
centered over the dome, to keep out any stray light. The
Diffusion Fabric is on top of the cylinder, approx. 4"
above the Meter. For all practical purposes, the Diffusion
Material is the same distance from the light source as it is
to the meter.
The second method of measure (as shown in this
illustration), uses a Digital Light Meter with the
incident light dome removed. There is a Flat Black
washer around the photo electric cell, to keep out any
stray light. The Diffusion Fabric is directly on the
photo cell, the most basic method of calculating light
loss.
There are many variables in calibrating light loss for Technical Textiles, such as the size of the diffusion, the distance of
the light source to the diffusion, the distance of the diffusion to the subject or measuring device, the amount of ambient
bounce not only produced by the diffusion itself, but other surrounding reflective surfaces, multiple light sources, etc.
Then of course there is the light meter used in the calculations.
Because of all the variables, we suggest that these calculations be used only to compare diffusion materials to each other.
Don't assume that our calculations will be the same for similar materials from other manufacturers, as many of our fabric
sources are not the same.
It is also not a good idea to compare different manufacturers light loss results, as their means of measuring may be
completely different.
We offer here two different measurements. In each case the parameters are exactly the same for all Technical Textiles.
** The FR (Flame Retardant), IFR (Inherently Flame Retardant) and SE (Self Extinguishing) designations do NOT mean
that these Fabric won't burn! In the case of FR, the fabric is treated with flame retardant chemicals, which will diminish
with time and when subjected to damp or wet situations. IFR means that the fiber used in weaving the fabric is non
combustible. This protection is there for the life of the fabric. Some of these fabrics WILL melt, even though both FR and
IFR textiles have met or surpassed the standards of NFPA 701. SE (Self Extinguishing) fabrics will burn a bit longer than
those with the NFPA 701 certificate, but self extinguish once the external flame source is no longer present. In all cases,
the melted liquid is extremely hot and stays hot well after flames are extinguished and can cause serious burns! NFR
fabrics are NOT treated and must be used with extreme caution.
